April 25 is World Penguin Day.  There are approximately 17-20 species of penguins in existence, most are found in the southern half of the globe.  While most penguins can reach swimming speeds of 4-7 miles per hour, the Gentoo penguin can reach speeds of 22 mph.  Their staple diets include fish, squid, crabs and other small sea animals.  To prevent being wet, they produce waterproofing oil.  They shed once a year, a process known as catastrophic molt. Their feather density is 100 feathers per square inch, more than any other bird, this helps them stay cozy in cold weather.

Climate change has reduced krill population by 80%, this has negatively affected penguin population who rely on this food source.

The most endangered penguin specie is the New Zealand yellow-eye penguin.  There are only 4000 left in the wild.
